I am lucky that I get to go to lots of events in Manchester. It always opens my eyes to new and exciting places that I didn’t even know existed. One of those places recently was Abel Heywood where I was invited for a food photography masterclass and a quick peek at what Abel Heywood are all about.
I found the food photography masterclass with STM Photography really interesting as they talked about using different coloured filters to give different effects to an image as well as getting that perfect ‘egg yolk breaking’ moment. I managed to ask how to make the vibrant colours, especially with egg yolks, pop and they showed me some useful Photoshop techniques to enhance my images. Always a bonus.
The food at Abel Heywood looks incredible. I didn’t try any of the dishes but had a quick chat with the chef who is passionate about sourcing as much local produce as possible. The food is traditional gastro pub fayre but my absolute favourite is the brunch menu. Two different menus, one for the sweet and one for the savoury fan. They also open from 7am on weekdays and 8am on weekends meaning you can pop in before work and have plenty of time to get over to the office with a full tummy. I’ll definitely be popping in to try the brisket hash with beetroot chutney, it sounds to die for.
The cocktail list also looks pretty good and their backbar is pretty well stocked for a pub rather than a bar. I spied Monkey 47, Edinburgh raspberry and Bulldog for starters and that is just the gin! They have a quirky take on the Bloody Mary which sees you fill in a slip of paper and tick the items you want to include in your perfect Bloody Mary. You choose exactly what you want and don’t want. Like yours with a real kick? Or just a savoury shot? They’ll make it whatever way you want. I’m not a Bloody Mary fan but I reckon a few go’s of this and I’ll have one I can drink! I tried their Berry Bellini with prosecco, Chambord, creme de frambois and strawberry puree. A little on the sweet side but delightfully fruity and fresh.
When I was leaving I noticed they were holding a Sex and the City themed quiz, I was gutted I hadn’t heard of this before. I swear I could win that quiz as the only participant! They do these regularly with plans for Game of Thrones and Friends versions. I’d advise you book though, the place was packed for the Sex and the City one.
If you’re planning a visit but aren’t sure how to get home they also have the answer to this, there’s a boutique hotel upstairs! I didn’t go in but they were fully booked on a random Wednesday night. I’m planning a visit soon so keep your eyes out for that.
Thanks to Abel Heywood for inviting us over and to STM Photography for the valuable tips. I was invited as a guest and not asked to pay for the drinks I tried. Thanks to Refresh PR for providing the images in this post.
