Christmas is on its way and it can mean dining out disappears from the radar to make way for work Christmas dos and gifts for your loved ones. When funds are tight, something has got to give, and that usually means less meals out for me! There are some great deals out there to be had and BookATable.co.uk is a good place to start. It lists special deals by restaurant so they are easy to see, and also lets you book a table online, meaning you don’t even have to pick up the phone! I was surprised to find some restaurants local to me on there so I popped along to Miller and Carter in Heaton Mersey to give it a try.
Miller and Carter have a pretty good cocktail menu with a selection of them being just £4.95 until 7pm every day. I indulged with a Strawberry Daiquiri whilst looking at the menu and it really hit the spot with its sweet fruitiness.
We were so indecisive when it came to choosing a starter that we chose the Sharing Board. It allowed us to try a little bit of a few different things and the Mac & Cheese was the shining star of the board. The cheese topping is oozy and gooey with a lighter sauce for the pasta underneath. The Meatballs were also good with a rich tomato sauce, perfect for dipping with the Garlic Bread Slices. The Nachos were fairly average though. I thought they would have been warmed but they were cold with cold toppings. Such a shame as the cheese from the mac & cheese would have worked so much better!
We had similar difficulty when it came to choosing our mains as there is so much choice! We settled for the Longbone Tomahawk Sharer and damn, it was the perfect choice! All steaks are served with a slice of onion loaf (which is incredible and I wanted a whole one to take home) lettuce wedge and there is a great choice of toppings. My friend chose the garlic and parmesan topping whilst I went for the stilton and ranch topping. You also get seasoned fries and your choice of steak sauce. So many restaurants serve their steaks with a small amount of green salad on the side, this is a full meal and totally worth the money. The steak was cooked medium, as recommended by our waiter, and was soft throughout. The lettuce wedges were crisp and actually incredibly filling. I managed about two mouthfuls along with the steak and I was pretty much done.
I was stuffed and would never have managed a full dessert, but Miller and Carter do some of their desserts in miniature that you can choose alongside your choice of coffee. I actually love this idea as you don’t have to miss out but there is also less waste! My friend chose the pretty Chocolate Pot, which was rich and gooey. I don’t think I could have managed a full one even if I had more tummy space to accommodate, it was that rich! The Creme Brûlée had a thin burnt sugar topping that had a satisfying crack and the creme underneath was light and smooth. The buttery shortbread biscuits were also good and I was so glad I gave them a try.
We had a lovely time at Miller and Carter and were pleasantly surprised by the impeccable staff. They know the menu, they know what goes well with each dish and they are incredibly prompt. I can’t wait to go back, especially after Christmas when I am skint again and will need to use those BookATable.co.uk deals!
