I thought I had seen the most Instagrammable restaurant ever when I visited the Florist in Liverpool. It turns out Manchester was feeling a little left out and the terrace area of Australasia in Spinningfields has been transformed into a space that is definitely giving the Florist a run for its money. Meet Sunset.
The terrace area is covered and heated, decorated with flowers, pastel pink and white washed wood furniture. You can expect to find an extensive wine list, afternoon tea and an evening menu of the exotic variety. Every detail has been carefully curated, including the exquisite golden cutlery, and the service is impeccable.
I visited to try the Signature Mixed Bento Box which includes a miso soup starter, before a selection of meat, fish and salad dishes from the Australasia kitchen. You can also get a vegan friendly version so it is perfect for most diners. The miso soup was absolutely delicious – full of umami flavours with crunchy vegetables for added texture, I would love to see this with some meat and noodles added as a main dish. I bit like a ramen style dish, if you will. The broth was rich and the perfect appetiser before the extensive selection presented with the bento box.
It would be rude not to partake in a little cocktail whilst in such pretty surroundings and the Frozen Pornstar Martini fitted the decor perfectly. It isn’t as boozy as the original version but the frozen aspect is a little different and fun. I’m all for different and fun.
The bento box is visually stunning. The sesame chicken was rich and flavourful, whilst the sushi was as I have come to expect from Australasia – fresh and well seasoned. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for all the dishes. The rice squares were hard and lacked flavour, whilst the spinach didn’t taste of very much at all. I liked the soup which is poured from the kettle as it had the same umami flavours as the miso I enjoyed at the beginning of the meal.
I love that there is a mixture of hot and cold dishes and, a little bit of everything. The pickled salad was lovely and the perfect palate cleanser in between the richer dishes. I just need some of them to have a little more flavour, perhaps a bit of seasoning and it would be perfect.
You can try the bento box for £17.50, which includes the signature mixed box and a miso soup starter. If you visit between 12pm and 6pm you can get the frozen pornstar martini and a sweet bento box for just £22.50 per person. I definitely need to go back and try that option. Will I see you there?
I was invited to dine as a guest of Sunset and was not asked to pay for my meal.
