On a recent visit to Cardiff, I made it my first priority to find Madame Fromage. The fine cheese specialist has a small restaurant attached where you can enjoy a selection of their cheeses or something a little more hearty.
Their welsh cawl served with chunks of Caerphilly cheese was the perfect lunch and has had me craving Welsh cheese ever since, so when an invite to review a new cheese subscription service dropped into my inbox, you can imagine my delight.
The Welsh Cheese Company was founded by musician Tom Pinder who felt that Welsh cheese wasn’t given the kudos it deserves, so he set up the company to bring Welsh cheeses together for consumers to buy in one place. Part of this plan involved spreading the word of Welsh cheese beyond Wales and the Clwb Caws was born. Clwb Caws means Cheese Club in Wales and it involves a selection of fine Welsh cheese dropping through your letterbox each month, what’s not to love?
I love how rustic the service is. You literally get cheese, either in their original packaging or cut from a larger box and well wrapped by the Welsh Cheese Company themselves. I also received a really good mix of cheese with a Goats Cheese, a Blue Cheese, a Mature Cheese and a crumbly Caerphilly.
The Mon Las is a blue cheese made by Caws Rhyd y Delyn on Anglesey. It is a Welsh take on a gorgonzola so fairly mild for a blue cheese with a rich creaminess. Very tasty!
The Heb Enw was my absolute favourite and one I will definitely buy again. A goats cheese from Pant Mawr, it is a firm goats cheese with a light saltiness that melts away in the mouth to a fresh yet mild taste. It was perfect with my favourite Hovis biscuits as their sweetness paired so well. I am not going to lie, I ate the chunk in less than 48 hours. Oops.
The Gorwydd Caerphilly isn’t like any Caerphilly cheese I have ever tasted and, it is not surprise that it has won a raft of awards. It is matured slightly longer than other versions which gives it a real depth of flavour. The lemony flavours initially on the palate make way for a slightly sour savoury flavour which is just delicious.
The Mature Cerwyn is the most generic of the cheeses offered but that is in no way a bad thing. Every cheeseboard needs a cheese that most people will enjoy and this, is it. Smoother than most mature cheese this has a lovely nutty flavour and it is the one I pulled out of the fridge the most often when I needed a quick cheesy fix.
You can sign up by direct debit on their website and the subscription costs £28 per month. There is also a great selection of hampers and gifts Perfect for the cheese lover in your life for Christmas. Don’t forget about me….
