Beauty – How To Strengthen Your Nails After Gel

In terms of regular beauty treatments, there is very little that I keep up. I have my hair coloured when it is needed – I am one of those people who all of a sudden notices that the grey is too much to bear, and demands an urgent appointment rather than planning ahead. I go for a regular wax (more about that soon) and used to be a regular at the nail salon to get gel nails. I love how they make my nails look glossy and ‘finished’, but the regular appointments and removal has killed my, once very strong nails. They were brittle, thin and sad. So I decided to give the gel a break and get them back into a decent condition.

As you can tell from this stellar line up, I was ready to throw everything at getting my nails sorted! I had the old gels soaked off at the nail salon before I got started with ALL of these. Well it can’t hurt can it?

The Leighton Denny Hydra Flex Trio is THE must have set if you have dry, brittle nails. It contains the Hydra Flex Remover in a handy 50ml size, which is perfect for taking abroad. It is acetone free and contains vitamin H to prevent your nails thinning, and rosehip oil to improve elasticity by nourishing the nail. I have been using this for the past few weeks to remove regular nail polish and it is also really quick to remove all that left over polish before you start again. It retails at £6 for the full 150ml bottle.

The Leighton Denny Hydra Flex Serum is my favourite treatment and something I keep by my bedside to use each night. It boosts hydration levels in the nails and cuticles to help soften and smooth brittle nails and, being a serum, it isn’t at all greasy like some nail oils I have used in the past. It retails at £12 on its own and lasts for ages as you only need the smallest amount (one pump) to coat each nail with serum. It has a lovely sweet smell too so isn’t overbearing in any way.

You can seal the serum in further with the Leighton Denny Hydra Flex Shield which is the king of top coats when it comes to nail nourishment. It seals in the serum allowing it to continue to work into the nail bed and bonds to the nail plate to create a solid barrier. I don’t use this as a top coat if I have a polish on as it is low gloss, and I love a shiny finish. It is good for before bed though and to help the serum to really get to work on fixing those dry nails. It retails at £12 but you can get the three in a trio set for £23.50, meaning the remover is free. Who doesn’t love a freebie?

Two other products that I love and keep in my handbag for regular top ups throughout the day are the Jessica Phenomen Oil and the CND RescueRXx . Both are cuticle oils so get to work on promoting the growth of your new nails and to keep them supple. The Jessica Phenomen Oil can also be used on rough patches of skin to moisturise so it is a great multi use product for travelling. The addition of sweet almond oil and jojoba means it smells fabulous too. It retails at £9.50 for 7.4ml. The CND RescueRXx is brought to you by the creators of Shellac, the original gel nail formula so they know what is needed following their gel treatments! It also contains jojoba as well as proteins to strengthen the nail and reduce peeling. Peeling has been my main concern as well as splitting down the sides so this has really helped make my nails more supple. You can only buy it from approved sellers although there are a few knocking around on eBay. I got this from the Titanic Spa in Huddersfield as part of an event and the mini size is just perfect, a little goes a long way!

Whilst this is all happening and your nails are getting nice and strong, you will want to keep them looking pretty. I have been loving the Leighton Denny polishes recently and have added a number to my ever-growing nail colour collection.  When my nails aren’t at their best I prefer a nude shade as I find this hides a multitude of sins, and ‘brief encounter’ is my current go to with an accent nail such as this ‘bronzed babe’ shade.

‘Brief encounter’ is a light beige nude with ‘bronzed babe’ being a pinky brown shade with a slight shimmer. Topped with a little Seche Vit topcoat you are good to go.

I have been using these products for around a month and I can’t tell you how amazing my nails feel. I have no splitting at all, they are a nice length and don’t break the second I take my eye of the ball. I am not sure I’ll ever go back to regular gel polishes now, and with these pretty colours from Leighton Denny, I don’t think I’ll need to.
